Cretan, 16th century. An exceptionally fine antique triptych icon: Scenes from the Life of Christ. Tempera on wood panel. Evidence of iconoclasm on central panel. Most likely a portable devotional altarpiece custom-made for an extremely high-status individual.

a. Left hand wing: when open shows Anastasis, when closed Annunciation.
b. Right hand wing: when open shows Nativity, when closed 'Noli Me Tangere'.
c. Centre: Crucifixion.
