  • Mary Berenson, née Smith (1864 - 1945), and her second husband, Bernard Berenson (1865 - 1959), the art historian (‘Mrs Berenson’ inscribed on a label on the reverse of the frame of the second);

  • Given by them to her daughter, Rachel Pearson Conn (Ray) Costelloe (1887 - 1940), the feminist politician, and her husband Oliver Strachey (1874 - 1960), the cryptographer, elder brother of Lytton Strachey and music enthusiast, on the occasion of their marriage at Cambridge in 1911;

  • thence by descent to the last owner.
