A pair of early provincial Louis XV walnut fauteuils (open armchairs). Mid-18th century. Each with cartouche-shaped padded back, arms, and serpentine-fronted seat, upholstered à chassis in plum velvet. Channelled frame with central floral motif on hipped cabriole legs. 

One stamped: ‘Nougaret. A Lyon’ on the reverse.

Pierre Nogaret (1718-1771), received title of maître (master carpenter) in 1745 in Lyon.

Although born in Paris, Pierre Nogaret served his apprenticeship and his whole career as a menuisier in Lyon, and is well known for the sinuous form and distinctive floral clusters of the carved frames of his seat furniture. Examples of Nogaret's work can be found in the Musée Historique and Museé des Arts décoratifs, Lyon, and in the Musée Jacquemart André and Museé des Arts décoratifs, Paris.
